I love quinoa (pronounced keen-wa). It comes from the Andes region of South America and its origins are truly ancient. It was one of three staple foods of the Inca civilisation, along with potatoes and corn. It was known then as the mother grain and now some people are calling it the "supergrain of the future".

Quinoa contains more protein than any other grain and it is of an unusually high quality. Many people like this dish. I hope you enjoy the great texture and taste of this superb grain.

It is for this reason (and, of course, that it is very delicious) that I have decided to try my hand at a new recipe.

This dish is simple, tasty and uses some excellent free-range chicken from Banfields Butchers on Colombo St. Again I stress that the better the quality of the ingredients the better the dish will taste. Go for it.

Quinoa, rocket and pistachio salad with chicken

Serves 4 1/2 cup quinoa - cooked as directed on packet

1 1/2 cups chicken stock

1 Tbsp olive oil

600g chicken breast

25g rocket leaves

3/4 cup flat-leaf parsley

3/4 cup mint

1/2 red onion, finely sliced

200g cherry tomatoes

1/2 cup pistachio nuts

3 Tbsp lemon juice

3 Tbsp olive oil

Black pepper to taste

Salt to taste

Lemon wedge for garnish

Put the quinoa in a saucepan and cover with chicken stock. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer until the grain is softened to your liking and set aside. I like it to have a little bite as it adds another texture to the dish. Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in a large fry pan and cook chicken until cooked through and golden on both sides. Set aside to rest. Place the quinoa, rocket, onion, parsley, mint, cherry tomatoes, and pistachio nuts into a bowl and gently combine. Take chicken and slice across the grain then add it to nike air max shoes the bowl. Finally add the lemon juice, olive oil and season with salt and pepper and mix thoroughly until everything is evenly coated. Serve in a large pile in the centre of the plate and garnish with lemon wedges.

Masonic hall museum call
Posted On 09/08/2010 22:23:36

A PENSIONER is calling for a former Masonic hall in Portishead to be turned into a museum to celebrate the industrial heritage of the town.

Cicely Familton, 84, pictured, who lives at Port Marine, says she would like the dilapidated hall at Pier Road turned into a community museum.

Plans were put forward earlier this year by the Eldon Lodge, who used watches y to meet at the hall, to turn it into six flats and a two- bedroom house. But the plans were rejected by councillors last month on the grounds that no parking was included in the development and that the properties would overlook neighbouring homes.

The hall was once the original ticket office and railway station which served Portishead Pier and the docks railway.

In the 19th century passengers would get off paddle steamers which docked at the pier and then board trains on the specially extended railway line before it was listed as a goods only station in 1904.

The hall has been vacant for several years, with the lodge relocating to Clevedon in 2004, and has been left to fall into disrepair.

Now Mrs Familton is calling for consideration to be given to turning the building into a heritage centre and museum to display some of Portishead's historic artefacts.

The countdown for the Commonwealth Games, scheduled to kick off on October 3, has begun. However, the developments of the last few weeks that has seen a barrage of skeletons tumbling out of the cupboards, stories of corruption and lack of preparedness about hosting the event in New Delhi, has set the clock back. And the premier science magazine Lancet's report of the Superbug's origin being New Delhi could not have been worse timed. The least damage this report will do is cause apprehension among the thousands of international sports people and sporting fraternity that are expected to fly into Delhi during this month.

I can't help being reminded of the huge contrast of how just a few weeks ago the world cheered South Africa for hosting the FIFA World Cup. Besides glorifying the game and the players, there were innumerable sources that reported saying that South Africa came out a clear winner in the 30 days of football frenzy that gripped the world.

Can we attribute all this to just a branding exercise? If the Organizing Committee of the Commonwealth Games had done proactive positive branding, could the damage caused during these two weeks have been avoided? One can't ignore handbags s the branding efforts that Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the host of the Olympics 2016 has already started to do, for an event slated six years hence! There is an email drive already circulating describing the solar observation tower -- the symbol of the Olympics 2016 -- that is being constructed on the island and which will be visible both from land and sea. In sharp contrast, 45 days before the Commonwealth event begins, the Delhi roads are dug up, construction deadlines have gone awry and widespread allegations are being flashed all over.

When Beijing hosted the Olympics, the infrastructure standards of China underwent a sea change. The Bird's Nest, a massive work of steel, was touted to be an architectural marvel. While there was some buzz about whether China could substantially change its world image and improve the world opinion on human rights issues, the focus was largely about the grandeur and splendour of the sports architecture and the magnificence of the closing ceremony. There were missed deadlines too, but China recovered very well.

While the Commonwealth Games may neither be as glorious as the FIFA World Cup or the Olympics, it is still the third largest multi-sport event in the world, after the Summer Olympics and the Asian Games and hosting them is a matter of great pride and reason for the entire nation to celebrate and rejoice.

If we were to recall the Asian Games of 1982 that were held in Delhi, some of the best infrastructure of that city got built at that time. As a matter of fact, Delhi underwent a complete facelift. The Asiad Village for housing and auditorium facilities; the Appu Ghar for tourist attractions (named after the mascot "Appu"); criss-cross flyovers, stadia like Talkatora Swimming Complex, Indraprastha and Jawaharlal Nehru Stadiums; the sprawling Pragati Maidan complex which is the hub of international conferences and exhibitions today. And how can one forget the biggest socio-economic benefit of the Asian Games -- the introduction of colour TV in India?

Like before, the after effects of the Games will undoubtedly be a greater and renewed spirit of sportsmanship not to mention the improved and updated sports infrastructure of five new stadia and the Games Village on the banks of the Yamuna river. The city is also gearing up with many new hotels and eating joints to cater to the 10,000-odd people expected to participate in the Games.

Let's also hope that AR Rahman, who is composing the anthem for the Games, can re-create the s

Montgomery County lifts burn b
Posted On 09/08/2010 04:01:51

Montgomery County on Friday lifted the burn ban that it had imposed July 5 after significant rains fell over the region in recent days.

The New River Valley has received several inches of rain the past week -- ranging from less than 2 inches in parts of Blacksburg and Christiansburg to nearly 6 inches in parts of eastern Montgomery County -- according to the National Weather Service.

However, officials asked that anyone planning to do outdoor burning call the sheriff's department and let them know so fire trucks will not be dispatched unnecessarily.

"The countywide ban went into effect July 5 for the protection of property and lives," officials said in a news release announcing the lifting of the ban.

"Thanks to all who have postponed outdoor burning until there is adequate rain."

Montgomery County has been aggressive in monitoring the dry conditions and was the first county in the state to impose a burn ban this year, said Dennis McCarthy, assistant regional forester for the Salem-based Western Region of the Virginia Department of Forestry.

He said Montgomery County has been a leader in the efforts to prevent fires.

The New River Valley, along with most of Virginia, has baked under extremely hot dry skies for most of the summer.

Peter Corrigan with the NWS in Blacksburg said Friday morning that most of the area got less than 50 percent of normal rainfall in June -- and most of it evaporated during the record-hot month.

The weather situation locally was more complicated in July with spotty rainfall. While Blacksburg recorded 4.62 inches of rain, Christiansburg had 1.71 inches and Pulaski had 1.31 at the official weather stations, Corrigan said.

Officials were concerned that, because of the recent rainfall, residents would think the fire danger had passed. But they still warned everyone to be vigilant against forest fires.

Veteran Draper Volunteer Department Fire Chief Dalford Phillips summed up the effort in just a few words.

"The main thing to do when it's dry or windy, just don't start fire," Phillips stated.

He noted that when a fire gets out of control the person responsible will almost always say they did not realize how dry or windy it was.

"I firmly believe most fires are accidental, and if we can raise the awareness of folks to the dangers and what they can do to reduce the chance of wildfires we will all be better off for it," said Fred Turck with the forestry department.

The person causing the fire is financially responsible for costs of fighting the fire and losses caused by it, Turck said.

The lifting of the Montgomery County ban and the recent rains are providing some relief. But as the state approaches the fall fire season, people need to keep their guards up, officials stressed.

McCarthy said rain can be local and fall in one place while nearby no rain falls. Across the state this summer, spotty has often been the term to describe rainfall.

"In terms of the drought conditions in Salem, yes, there has been a great deal of relief provided over the last week," he said.

"And yes, the rain has also not been complete in coverage over the droughty area from s

Let us not judge one another

I WRITE regarding the article in the Chronicle on July 8, about the triple tiffany sale christening of the children of the homosexual men in Danbury.

I have no objection to their children being christened, or homosexuals, but am astounded that the minister of St John the Baptist Church Graham Blythe could say that he is fully supportive of these men, adding: "They are a caring, loving family in every way!" How can they be when the children were from surrogates, with no concern for the emotional needs and feelings of the children so produced? They have no real mother and were created to satisfy the whims of these rich men.

One of them, Barrie, says: "As a Christian family it is important for our children to be given the opportunity to follow the teachings of the church."

Does Dr Blythe tell them what the Bible actually says about homosexual behaviour? I doubt it very much. What hope is there for the church in Britain? I pray that he is replaced with someone who will preach and teach the whole word of God.

Let us register deaths in Wels
Posted On 09/07/2010 02:30:59

FAMILIES who travel from Wales to England for emergency care should be allowed to register births and deaths in the Welsh language, the Government was urged yesterday.

Plaid Cymru's Caernarfon MP Hywel Williams called for a change in the law so "happy parents and grieving families" could mark significant events in their own language.

Under reforms brought in on April 1 1969 - exactly 40 years ago - births and deaths in England can only be Juicy Couture Fake Handbags registered in English.

Registrations in Wales can be either bilingual or English, but Welsh-only certificates are not allowed.

Introducing his Registration of Births and Deaths (Welsh Language) Bill, Mr Williams said: "Births and deaths are the most significant events in life - the very alpha and omega.

"It is proper and humane and in my view a fundamental right that these events be marked in one's own language." Mr Williams said some Welsh families travelled to England for the birth of a child for specialist care or because their area was close to the border. Replica Marni Handbags

Many families in North Wales, for example, had to travel to Merseyside in an emergency.

He told MPs: "Quite reasonably, families in these circumstances may wish to register such events in Welsh." Bilingual certificates would continue to be available under the Bill and that would remain the "usual choice" for most families, he said.

The measure, which he said has "wide support in Wales", received its first reading but is unlikely to become law due to a lack of parliamentary time.

Incentives that can be right
Posted On 09/07/2010 02:23:13

THE late and much-missed Alastair Ross Goobey, for many years the head of Hermes and in charge of the British Telecom pension fund, once compared performance pay schemes to the Caucus-race watches y in Alice in Wonderland.

That was a race where the runners all started in different positions, ran for as long as they liked and stopped in different places. Then everyone got a prize. The Caucus-race was fiction but the goings-on at Shell, where executives missed their targets but still collected awards under a "discretionary" clause in the deal, shows how spot on the analogy was. Institutions have been signalling for months that they considered a time of recession and falling returns to shareholders would make them more vigilant on pay deals.

It should have happened in 2004 when, for example, they had the opportunity to vote on the now-despised Shell deal in the first place. But, as Sarah Wilson of corporate governance adviser Manifest points out, the votes against the long-term incentive plan amounted to less than 12%.

While more institutional engagement is surely a good thing, it always runs the risk of being too blunt a weapon. It is reported that Sir Martin Sorrell and WPP have run into trouble getting approval for a new five-year scheme that, if all the targets were met, could earn him Pounds 60 million in bonuses over the next five years.

Put like that, it is an astonishing sum of money, particularly coming straight after the scheme it replaces, which gave Sir Martin the opportunity to earn Pounds 44 million. But this underlines the danger of generalisations.

Two Fake Fashion Chanel Wallets key things make WPP schemes different from those common in other companies. First and most important, if they want the rewards, the executives have to take risk. They have to put in some of their own money. If they do badly, that money gets lost or is much diminished. Most schemes work on the basis of heads the executive wins, tails the executive does not lose. WPP is not like that. To have a chance of making Pounds 60 million, Sorrell has to put up more than Pounds 12 million of his own money in shares and options. The gearing works hugely in his favour but that is no reason to ignore the risk he is taking.

The second point relates to the current scheme, billed when launched as giving him Pounds 44 million. Well, in 2008 it paid him shares worth just under Pounds 5 million, and there are four years of payments to come. So extrapolating last year's numbers, he could get around Pounds 20 million in total. This is far less than half the much-trumpeted maximum, which is right given the way recession has hit his business. Given also that recovery is still some way off, it will be an astonishing achievement if he gets anywhere near the maximum under the new scheme.

The institutions are right to question these things. But they also need to be willing and able to discriminate.

In The Thick of It; How David
Posted On 09/07/2010 02:23:06

IWAS going to give Borecelona a miss as a topic this week, but the boss has insisted. I have been asked to address the issue of how Posh and Becks will cope lifestyle-wise if he moves from Manchester United to FC Barcelona. The answer is, of course, that they would do rather well.

Beckham could finish off his career - about seven years or so - at Camp Nou and he and his missus could go shopping every day and still not exhaust the retail opportunities.

The Diagonal, the Passeig de Gracia, and the Rambla de Catalunya are home to large numbers of fashionable shops and all the names are there, from Chanel to Vuitton. I know. I have walked past them all on my way to C&A.

It is not that I am a cheapskate, or wish eternally to be stylistically challenged. C&A has two advantages. It has excellent air-conditioning which can be a major factor on a baking hot Barcelona day and it sells clothes that nearly fit me.

handbags o

I would love to frequent those elegant designer places. Or even a shop which is verging on smart. But until Massimo Dutti opens a chain called Fat Bloke With Short Legs, or there is a shop called Tommy Fullfigure, I am forever man at C&A.

I did have one brush with labelled clothing. When khaki was in fashion, I purchased an outfit in the sales at a shop called Coronel Tapioca. I didn't realise at the time it was named after a character in the Tintin cartoon books.

I bought the complete rig-out. A pair of trousers with legs that unzipped at the knee. (Handy for Masonic rituals.) The trousers had eight pockets. The matching shirt had eight pockets too. The jacket had about 16 pockets.

It would have been ideal kit for a walk in the rainforest, but I did feel a bit of a pillock striding down the Ramblas dressed like an explorer. The embarrassment of wearing clothes with the words Coronel Tapioca in big letters was as nothing to the red face as you hold up a bus queue while you try to work out in which of your 32 pockets you had put your ticket.

I cannot imagine that Becks, with his innate sense of style, will have such problems. But, if the Beckhams are to settle in Barcelona, they must adopt the Catalan trait of extreme thrift.

I am in a position here to be of some assistance to Posh. Or, at least, the lady of the house is. She will happily accompany Mrs Becks to the Mango outlet store where you can get a pair of breeks for (euros)4, a jacket for (euros)12, and the full bhoona for less than (euros)40 euros. This will make only the slightest dent in Mr Becks's weekly wage of (euros)80,000 and leave plenty left to lavish on Brooklyn and Romeo at Zara for Weans, as the shop isn't called.

In the matter of fine dining, I will be happy to guide the Beckhams to the many fabulous restaurants I frequent only when a visiting wealthy chum is paying. There is one literally right up my street. It is called Els Pescadors, an upmarket gaff much visited by footballers, TV people, and other folk who can afford to keep the chauffeur-driven limo hanging about for four hours.

You can have a wonderful gastronomic experience replica at Els Pescadors for about (pounds) 40 a head. If a restaurant in Scotland offered the same food at the same prices, I would be a regular.

But in Borecelona I could have eight sumptuous lunches for that (pounds) 40. Or two dinners at the Galician restaurant round the corner, where the food is even better than that at Els Pescadors. I do not normally d
